What Are Bone Level Dental Implants?

To understand what bone level dental implants are and how they work, it’s always easier to go back to basics and take a look at dental implants in general. Put simply, dental impacts are artificial, prosthetic root replacements that are designed to resemble a patient’s natural teeth in both function and shape. They are surgically placed in the patient’s jawbone, using an abutment to connect them by dental professionals to replace missing teeth, maintain and support bridges, crowns or dentures and to improve the aesthetic finish of a patient’s smile and appearance.

Bone level implants, in particular, are dental implants specifically designed for bone level rather than tissue level restorations. They are known to offer a more flexible approach to restorative dentistry, as they allow for an individual emergence profile, which creates better aesthetic results for patients. Typically, when it comes to bone level implants, submerged healing is recommended, making them ideal for clinical situations where a two-phase procedure is vital.

What Are The Benefits Of Bone Level Implants?

  • Help to reduce and eliminate different dental issues, such as tooth loss, gum disease, cavities, jaw deterioration, and further bone loss.
  • They offer optimal security for adjacent teeth due to their unmatched stability for both the replacement artificial teeth and any teeth placed on top of them. This helps to prevent movement and patient discomfort.
  • They outmatch bridges or dentures in strength and durability and behave like natural teeth.
  • They are incredibly versatile and can be covered with dentures, crowns and bridges.
  • Dental implants are ideal for both functional and aesthetic restorations. They help improve biting and chewing ability and make a cosmetic difference to a patient’s appearance and smile.

Bone Level vs. Tissue Level Implants – What’s The Difference?

These two types of dental implants differ in their design, placement and recovery time. Bone level implants are designed to fully submerge under a bone, whereas tissue implants have a collar that sticks out slightly. When it comes to implant placement, bone level refers to the epicrestal level of a patient’s oral composition, whereas tissue level solutions are placed transmucosally. The difference in recovery time is quite stark, with bone level implants taking around 4 to 6 months to heal, whereas tissue solutions only taking around 2 weeks.

When it comes to benefits and drawbacks, the function and purpose of the implant will usually lead the way. Bone level implants, on the whole, are less likely to experience complications as they provide a very high level of support and stability. On the other hand, tissue level implants are easier to clean and maintain as the implant’s rough surface is less likely to be exposed. However, the mentioned collar may be visible around the patient’s gum line.
